RESUMO

The surface modification of powdered tire-rubber to increase the adhesion to cement paste was studied. Industrially recovered tire particles were obtained in the market. The particles were surface-treated with H2S04 and NaOH aqueous solutions for 15min. Cement paste test specimens were cast (water/cement ratio = 0,33) with the addition of 5 or 10% rubber (35 mesh maximum size). Water sorption, density, resistance to acid attack and flexural strength measurements were performed; the test specimens with 10% NaOH-treated-rubber showed the best results. Scanning electron microscopy, water sorption, flexural strength, compressive strength, abrasion resistance, modulus of elasticity and fracture energy measurements were performed using test specimens (water/cement ratio = 0,36) containing 10% of as-received or 10% of NaOH(saturated solution)-treated-rubber. The results of flexural and compressive strength, fracture energy and resistance to acid attack show that the addition of rubber particles improve the toughness and reduce the porosity of the specimens. Weight loss by abrasion (-1,20,4% for control specimens; -1,70,4%, using treated-rubber and -4,01,2% using as-received rubber, after 600 cycles) and electron microscopy examination show that the NaOH-surface-treatment enhances the rubber-matrix adhesion. The use of so treated tire-rubber particles as addition, instead of aggregate, in cement-based materiaIs is promising for applications such as driveways or in road constructions.
