RESUMO

This Ph.D thesis demonstrates the concern with the serious current social problems that come as an effect of the transformation in the field of labor. We make descriptions of the so-called golden years, when the peak of economic growth was ongoing; the crisis of the 1970s; the changes occurred with the productive restructuring and globalization; the new model of labor, with the adoption of the concept of a lean company. This model generated much unemployment, and, in order to compensate what had been destroyed, companies started to develop actions of social and environmental responsibilities. Companies have being using, more than ever, these practices of social responsibility. This thesis aims at showing that such practices are adopted as strategies of giving companies a market distinction and, at length, of making them more competitive. This fact, however, has not resulted in effective social and economic changes as expected. Besides the bibliographical research, this work has made a case study of three large companies, being two of them multinational, in the fields of pharmacy, automotive, and finance. We present what these companies have been developing in terms of social responsibility for the external and internal public, and the involvement of the community and workers in the elaboration of the social programs
