RESUMO

Mass tourism in the twentieth century began after World War II and it was consolidated during the 1970s. Howwever, since the mid 1980s, it has become more specialized or segmented. There are many kinds of segmented tourism, and one deserves particular attention: it is the ecotourism. Ecotourism is related to the sustainable development of the natural environment and the cultural, social, and economic resoueces of local communities. At best, it promotes and stimulates environmental conservation and also helps to educate people about the importance of caring for our planet. Ecotourism is growing around the world, notably in Brazil, which has great natural and cultural potential. At the same time, the resort industry is also growing. There are now many geographical types of resorts, including coastal, river, forest, hydrothermal, rural and mountain. These resorts have their own characteristics, including the promotion of many recreational activities, and they are designed to attract a variety of clients. The association of resorts with ecotourism forming ecoresorts has been each time more frequent. But the development of ecoresorts has sometimes led to controversy. This study analyzes the potential conflicts and benefits of the union of both, ecotourism and resorts, and consequently the viability of the ecoresorts while sustainable tourism.
