RESUMO

This study describes and characterizes several strategies to solve multiplication problems, sed by students attending elementary and secondary schools. It seeks to determine, strategies used by the students to solve problems involving the concept of proportionality, and wich could be considered indicators of their understanding of the concept of proportionality. The subjects of the study were 82 students from a private school located in Itajaí, in the State of Santa Catarina. They were aged between 12 and 17, in the 6th and 8th grades of elementary school and 2nd grade of secondary school. The students were asked to solve nine multiplication problems involving isomorphic measures, adapted from Vergnaud. The analysis of the strategies used by the students to solve the problems reveals that it is possible to identify, from their records, elements indicating their understanding of the concept of proportionality. The results showed that students didnt know how do solve several problems using the multiplicative strategies in proportionality, in stat of they used try do use additive strategies to solve these problems.
