RESUMO

Obesity has become a major public health problem, currently being considered by WHO as a global epidemic. This disease, initially limited to adults, has expanded quickly in the pediatric age group. Childhood obesity is a matter of interest as a risk factor associated with increased morbidity and mortality from Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) and other chronic conditions in adulthood that reduce the quality of life. The risk of obesity, especially in the abdominal region, seems to be an important trigger for the onset of Insulin Resistance (IR) and metabolic complications such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, and glycemic disturbances. Although not show frank atherosclerosis, obese children have this cardiovascular risk profile consistent with its early development. Since 2004, anthropometric studies conducted with students from Nova Era - MG, it was found that overweight and obesity rates of underweight. Given this situation, the aim of this study was to determine the obesity prevalence and its association with IR and clinical, nutritional and biochemical cardiovascular risk factors in schoolchildren of Nova Era - MG, in order to support the planning of public health actions in the region. We conducted a descriptive survey of population and, subsequently, observational epidemiological case-control study, double-masked with schoolchildren from 6 to 10 years enrolled in six schools in the municipal education system of Nova Era-MG. The case group consisted of 65 obese children, paired with 130 normal weight students were selected through stratified random sampling, which constituted the control group. The matching criteria were sex, age and school, and in each case were selected 02 controls. In the first step, we measured height and weight of 1027 schoolchildren of both sexes for BMI calculation and verification of the obesity prevalence in the population. In the second step cases were defined as those with obesity, e.g., students with z-score indicator of BMI for age >+2 and as normal, students with Indicator BMI / age in the interval - 1
