RESUMO

Nowadays a great effort had been directed to research work in order to attend the environmental protection agencies demands for minimizing the levels of gases emission pollutants. The consumers requirements for more economic and durable vehicles had motivated also the researchers to look for more corrosion resistance materials in order to substitute the traditional materials used in automobile industry. In this context, the high-performance of stainless steels, specially related to its high corrosion resistance is now used in the automobile exhaust system. The objective of this study was to assess the corrosion resistance of stainless steel type AISI 304, 439 and 409 in a synthetic solution of condensed ethanol fuel, as alternative materials for the manufacture of the exhaust system of automotive vehicles. For this purpose it have been raised anodic polarization curves of the steel samples in a synthetic solution of alcohol condensed containing 24mg/L of chloride, before and after induction of defects induced on the surface of the samples in order to accelerate the corrosive process in samples. The results showed that the condensate solution did not cause corrosion in the studied steels, even in the region of defects. However, potentiodynamic tests performed in an aqueous solution of sodium chloride 3%(m/v) in these same samples showed that the corrosion resistance of the studied steels decreases following: AISI 304, AISI 439 and AISI 409. The same evidence was found in the immersion tests in ferric chloride. The results obtained suggest the studied steels are very convenient to be used in exhaust systems of vehicles running on ethanol, because there is no corrosion pitting. For this reason the choice must be based on the best cost-benefit ratio.
