RESUMO

In order to find clones with high resistance levels to Erwinia carotovora subsp. catorovora and good agronomic traits, 234 clones from the Potato Breeding Program at the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA) were evaluated. It was also evaluated the correlation between tuber dry matter content and resistance level to Ecc and identify traits for the easy evaluation of resistance to be applied in the breeding program. Horticultural performance was evaluated in field trials in Lavras, during the growing seasons of 2005 and 2006. The reaction to Ecc was assayed in the Bacteriology Laboratory, Phytopathology Departament (UFLA), using three tubers from each clone. Cultivar Monalisa and clone CBM 9-10 were used as susceptible and resistant controls, respectively. Tubers were innoculated with a 108 CFU/mL of bacterial suspention and kept in BOD at 28ÂC for 72 hours. Diameters and the depth of the rotten tissue were measured, and then the area, volume and penetrability were estimated. The diameter was the best trait to detect resistant clones to Ecc. Negative correlations were observed between tuber specific gravity and traits related to Ecc, showing that clones with higher tuber specific gravity tend to be more resistant. Clones CBM 22-19, CBM 3-26, PRM 348, GSI 1-17, JUG 1-03, MCR 5-69 e OAS 1-28 showed good levels of resistance to Ecc and were promising for horticultural traits.
