RESUMO

This is the history of the thought of a group of Latin American researchers, based on the notion of rhetoric developed by Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyleca, and on the notion of micro-history, developed by the group Italian historians headed by Ginzburg. Early in 1971, the Demographic Studies Commission became the Population and Development Commission of the Latin American Social Sciences Council (CLACSO). The Commission was divided into three workgroups: one studied sociodemographic information; a second one, migrations, and another, fertility. In 9-14 November1972, in Mexico City, the Fertility Work group first met and, among several decisions, changed its name to "Grupo de Trabajo sobre el Proceso de Reproducción de Ia Población". This group promoted seven international meetings, produced - among books, papers and reports - some 100 titles, and became, between the first meeting and the last one, which took place in Cuernavaca, Mexico, in 2-5 February 1982, one of the most important forums concerning Latin American Social Sciences. The main object of this thesis is the history of this group s ideas
