Representações sociais da violência : o crime e o castigo na perspectiva de adolescentes em situação de risco psicossocial

RESUMO

This qualitative exploratory research focused at the social representations of violence, crime and punishment shared by adolescents in a situation of psychosocial risk. It aimed at identifying attitudes, concepts information and images concerning violence, crime and punishment built up and experienced by these adolescents; investigating factors that can contribute to their vulnerability to violence; identifying what or who they hold responsible for violence and crime and explore their view about the type of punishment received by those who commit crimes. Data collection instruments included semi-structured interview and group interview. Participants were 18 adolescents aged between 14 and 17, residents in a region of Distrito Federal with high incidence of crimes, and students of a local state school. For data analysis it was used the technique of discourse analysis. Results show that participants social representations of violence are constructed from their knowledge of the places where it occurred, the attitudes and images to which they are exposed daily and from participants experiences at home, neighborhood and school. Their social representations of the subject are also constituted by their communication with family, parents, friends and neighbors and media. Participants strongly question the system of punishment adopted in their country, but they believe that adolescents involved in crime and violence, both authors and victims, can be recovered to society if they are supported by protective factors during the process of construction of resilience. The conclusions suggest that the discussions and reflections about violence need to extrapolate the sphere of individuals and particular sectors to actions of more complex and wider scope that gather different segments of society that can effectively contribute to alleviate the proliferation of this phenomenon within society.
