RESUMO

The present research was conducted with 27 persons who live with Arterial Hypertension (AH) and diabetes, and are registered in a Program for persons living with AH and diabetes at a Health Basic Unit in Campo Grande, MS. The objective of the study was to analyze and to compare the social representations of health and illness between the participants and non-participants of a support group. Structured interviews were conducted with questions regarding the socio-demographic profile of the participants, characteristics of their social support network, the meaning given to health and illness, their knowledge about how to care for AH and diabetes, aspects that favors and makes it difficult the treatment and the opinions of the participants on the attendance they receive at the Health Basic Unit. The data was analyzed qualitatively in accordance with the theoretical approach of the social representations. The majority of the participants was female (n=22), with school level of incomplete junior high and family income of up to three minimum wages. The majority of the participants told did not receive any type of material support. For the persons who do not attend the support group the more cited sources of emotional were the family and the religion. For the persons who attend it, the group is seen as a source of emotional support. The meanings given to health and illness, as well as the knowledge about AH and diabetes were not different in both groups. The participants related more frequent to health and illness to body sensations that they associated with them. The knowledge about AH and diabetes was restricted and the main cited forms of care were food intake control and the medicine use. Among the factors that favor the treatment, the care at the Health Basic Unit and the access to it were the most cited. The participants referred to the lack of money as something that makes it difficult to buy adequate food for their diet. The attention and care that they receive in the Unit were praised by the majority of the participants.
