RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to identify the social representation that mothers have about adolescence, seeking to understanding the ways in which they elaborate this knowledge and how they relate to their adolescent children on a daily basis, within a specific social and cultural context. For such, an ethnographic perspective of the Social Representation Theory was used. Fourteen mothers participated in this study, aged from 30 to 55 years, residents of a low income urban region located in the periphery of the Federal District, all of which had attended the health care center in 2006. Semi-structured interviews were carried out, following informed consent. For data organization and treatment the software ALCESTE was used. Data was classified into two axis: family history and adolescence, comprised by four thematic classes: 1. Family context and maternity; 3. The adolescents history; 2. The mothers history; 4. The mothers perception about adolescence. The results point out that adolescence is represented as a time still in construction where the negative, the hazardous delineate this process. They are surprised with the behavior changes in their son or daughter. In order to talk about the adolescent and their relationship with him or her, the mothers review the familys context at the time of his or hers gestation and birth and talk about situations of abandonment, social and emotional deprivations. Such memories bring forth the content of fear and guilt. The author concludes that there are different forms of conceiving adolescence, thus confirming the most recent tendency which considers adolescence as a historically constructed condition.
