RESUMO

This work presents a study of shape descriptors applied to objects classification and identification, including the Fourier descriptors, eliptic Fourier descriptors and the necessary normalizations to achieve translation, rotation, scale, reflection and starting point invariances. It is also proposed a fast and automatic algorithm to determine piecewise linear discriminant functions that allow the classes separation in the pattem space for any kind of probability density function. The validity and efficiency of the presented methods are evaluated using an application that seeks plants identificationby their folioles. The performances of each used method are compared, explained and commented, and the superiority of the Fourier descriptors among the others is shown for this application
