RESUMO

The objective of this dissertation is to reflect on the question of psychiatric hospitalization with emphasis on psychiatric inpatient units in general hospitals. The experience of implanting a psychiatric inpatient unit in the University General Hospital of the State Univeristy of Campinas (UNICAMP) is described and analysed. To provide a theoretical basis for the analysis, a criticaI and reasonably through review of specific literature is presented. The study shows the relevance and validity of psychiatric inpatient units in general hospitals, pointing out the advantages, limitations and difficulties in their present state of development. As one of the central characteristics of the inpatient units in general hospitals is the short length of stay, special attention has been given to this issue. A casuistical study relating to 300 admissions in the first two years of the psychiatric inpatient unit of the University Hospital (UNICAMP) was made, describing the social-demographic, clinical and assistential characteristics of the inpatients. The mean length of stay was 19 days. The variables - clinical diagnosis, place of residence, religious affiliation and age - were closely to the length of stay .
