RESUMO

Many industrial activities contribute to a significant increase in the concentrations of metal ions in natural waters by not adhering to an appropriate treatment in accordance with the standards established by the legislation. The applicability of new methods of costbenefit has been developed in order to facilitate a system of treatment for removal of contaminants from the industrial process. The electroplating is one of the industries responsible for generating wastewater containing metal ions of high toxicity. In this study new materials are prepared from residues of vegetable fibres, sugarcane bagasse and wood sawdust (Manilkara sp.), to remove Zn2+ ions in aqueous solution and in the electroplating wastwater. First the materials adsorbents were obtained through chemical modification of bagasse and sawdust with succinic anhydride and EDTA dianhydride. These materials were characterized according to of each new organic function introduced and later were applied in batch systems to evaluate the ability of adsorption in relation to Zn2+ ions in aqueous solution and in the electroplating from the zinc eletrodeposition line. The materials adsorbents modified with succinic anhydride showed better performance in view of higher capacity for adsorption of Zn2+ cations in relation to modified with EDTA dianhydride. The maximum capacity of adsorption for the Zn2+ ion in aqueous solution was 125.00mg/g, 144.93mg/g, 80.00mg/g and 105.26mg/g for materials modified BMAs2, SMAs2, BMDe e SMDe, respectively. Since, in the wastewater there are other ions interfering in the metal to be adsorbed, these values of adsorption maximum decrease to 54.64mg/g, 60.98mg/g, 45,45mg/g and 47,39mg/g for materials modified BMAs2, SMAs2, BMDe e SMDe, respectively. Upon the results more satisfactory tests were carried out implementing the removal of Zn2+ in the wastewater using fixed-bed columns, in laboratory scale. For these results and based on the actual wastewater generation from an electroplating industry located at Contagem - MG, a project on an industrial scale was realized to find the dimensions required for real applicability of these new chelating materials
