RESUMO

A floristic and phytosociological study, associated with edaphic aspects was carried out in two areas of quartzite rock field, located in Serra do Itacolomi and Serra do Ouro Branco, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Four communities, classified according to habitat (rocky outcrops and plateaus) and geographical area (Itacolomi and Ouro Branco), were compared in terms of their floristic composition, vegetation structure and soil nutritional characteristics. Chosen areas are located at an altitude of about 1.550 m. The vegetation sampling was performed using 60 plots of 10 x 10 m, arranged systematically in the communities. Analysis of pH, nitrogen and available phosphorus were made in 32 soil samples. We found 298 species of vascular plants, where Asteraceae and Poaceae had the greatest number of species. Most of the species with the highest levels of value of importance belong to Poaceae. Only Apochloa euprepes (Poaceae) showed high levels of importance value in the four communities simultaneously. The analysis of similarity and ordination with the presence / absence of species revealed a distinct floristic composition among the four communities. In general, we observed a predominance of hemicryptophytes on the number of species and the vegetation coverage, and phanerophytes showed preference for rocky outcrops. The soils, considered acidic and poor in nutrients, showed differences between habitats. In the rocks, where there were high species richness and diversity, besides greater heterogeneity of forms of life, the soil had higher amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen. Species occurrence and populations size were strongly related to habitats and geographical areas. Serra do Itacolomi and Serra do Ouro Branco were considered different in terms of floristic composition and similar in vegetation structure.
