RESUMO

Introduction. This qualitative study, aimed to identify in Palmas-TO, the expressions of elderly recipients of care or retirement benefit and bar goers on the relationship between work, leisure and retirement. Reasons. The rationale of the research seeks to understand the relationship between continuity, rupture and habits in the life course of older people and their relationship with work, society, family and culture, taking into account the sociological theories of aging and theories of habitus of Pierre Bourdieu. Methodology. The research methodology is qualitative, exploratory and descriptive, conducted through structured interviews with six elderly males aged 65 to 73 years selected by convenience sampling. Results and analysis. The results bring the profile of the elderly with low education and income and diversity of family life. The relationship between retirement and leisure indicates a vision of leisure activities as a diversion and a social exchange relationship, that has changed after retirement for some elders, and has not changed for others; theres no contradiction with leisure and the world of work, and no contradiction with the family. The habitus of the elderly have continued in their life course, but the retirement sets up new relationships with friends and grandchildren in their free time. Few suggestions were made for leisure in the city context. The context of leisure is related to the capitalist entertainment industry, but it should be the object of public policy.
