RESUMO

Research conducted overseas and in Brazil since the 1990 decade has focused on the adviser-advisee dyad. The present study aimed at examining the interaction occurring inside the adviser-advisee dyad taking as reference HindeÂs view about interpersonal relationships in dyads. Interviews were conducted with three advisers and five advisees of a Genomic Sciences and Biotechnology program of a private university of Middle-West Brazil. The results suggest that, in the course studied, the dimensions of HindeÂs conception interpersonal perception, similarities and differences, reciprocity and complementarity, power and conflict and commitment and satisfaction could be identified in the adviser-advisee relationship. In addition, it was noticed, a positive, reciprocally appreciative stance prevails in these five dimensions. However, the positive stance does not hinder the adviser from exercising power, although with moderation. This result may be related to what has been found about similarities in the adviser-advisee dyad, which, in turn, may facilitate the communication process, promote interaction, and, consequently, learning, as well as to reduce the possibility of conflict of opinions.
