RESUMO

This work reports the development and implementation of a computer controlled optical reflectometer and use of the system for characterization of gold, palladium and gold-palladium thin films, with the latter two structures used as transducers for hydrogen detection. The system is designed with several parts actuated by stepper motors with an electronic interface and a graphics user interface that allows building up experiments by use of command sets defined by the user. The reflectometer, when used under Kretschmannâs prism coupling configuration, has a built-in control strategy that allows keeping the laser footprint stationary on the sample, independently of the incidence angle. For hydrogen detection the property of specific adsorption of the gas by palladium was used to test the sensitivity of the surface plasmon resonance technique on single palladium films and gold-palladium composite films. The results obtained with the reflectometer showed specific detection of hydrogen down to a concentration of 4%
