RESUMO
Cobalt-60 gamma radiolysis, at doses between 0 and 160 kGy, of 3% solutions of CBr4 in CCl4 (degassed and prepared under vacuum) produ- ced many products including CCl3Br, CCl2Br2, CCIBr3 and C2Cl6, which were identified by GC-MS. Other products such as C2Cl4, C2CIBr3, C2Cl2Br2, C2Cl3Br and C2Br4 were identified by a rnethod of interpolation of relative retentions. The values G{CCl3Br) =1,8 0,2, G(CCl2Br2) = 0,25 0,04 and G(C2Cl6) = 0,23 0,03 were determined. The comparison of these values with those in the literature for the same products obtained from the radiolysis of CCl4 with other scavengers, suggests that CBr4 is not an efficient scavenger in CCl4. The thermolysis of these solutions at temperature between 150 and 250°C gives the same products as radiolysis indicating that product formation of the latter involves radical-radical reactions. Mechanisrns involving the radicals CCl3, CBr3, CCl2 and CBr2 have been proposed. Formation of unsaturated perhalogen compounds is suggested to be a consequence of decomposition reactions on the chromatographic columns used.
