RESUMO

This dissertation has the purpose of identifying if, among the military police officer, the color of skin is the main suspicion factor. Therefore, 78 questionnaires were applied on the students of the Formation Course of Officials (Curso de FormaÃÃo de Oficiais) (CFO) and 376 to the students of the Formation Course for Soldiers (Curso de FormaÃÃo de Soldados) (CFSD), in order to rate the perception of institutional racism of the future professionals of the Military Police. Besides this, 469 questionnaires and 24 interviews were applied to the already professional policemen, having like this a means to establish a parallel between the experienced policemen s perceptions and the ones that are still in the formation schools. Besides, starting from the Bulletins of Occurrences (BO s) of 07 Units of the Military Police, a database was set up with 1538 registrations of people that were considered suspected or imputed in police occurrences in the year of 2004. As a result, it was verified that, 65,1% of the professionals noticed that the blacks and mulattos were prioritized in the approaches, which confirms the perception of students of CFO and CFSD, with 76,9% and 74%, respectively. In the police officers perception, the suspect is predominantly young, male and black. There are indications that the police approach also reflects a relationship of power, in that those less enlightened are the ones selected systematically. In conclusion, the data raised in the present dissertation allow the inference that the color of skin is the main suspicion factor among the military policemen
