RESUMO

Quality of Working Life is a recent initiative (1950) that takes into account two dimensions which have ever shown to be intertwined: Well-being and Work Performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate what is Quality of Working Life from the point of view of military policemen of four battalions of the Military Police of Pernambuco (PMPE): 1st Military Police Battalion (1st BPM), 11th Military Police Battalion (11th BPM), Police Special Forces (BPChoque), and Radio Patrol Police Battalion (BPRP), and how they understand these aspects as fulfilled in their work environment. The study is exploratory and, therefore, is not attached to any specific theory, but rather involve various existing models in the investigation and identification of the more significant dimensions, from the worker s perspectives, of what is Quality of Working Life (QWL). The strategies used in the survey supporting the work had qualitative and quantitative aspects. For data gathering, the survey method, interviews, and document analysis were used. The analysis of clusters was used in the interpretation of the data. The survey results revealed that the Quality of Working Life for the population under study can be defined by ten dimensions (WELFARE, POLICE LIKE EXTENSION OF FAMILY, RESPECT, JOB, DECISION, VALORIZATION, BENEFITS, PROMOTION, EXPRESSION e INTEGRATION), which were originated from the identification of the content pertained to each cluster of variables within each dimension. The importance and level of satisfaction for each of the dimensions were also computed. There was no dimension considered to be of minor or no importance - all of them were considered to be at least reasonably important. Moreover, there was no dimension considered to be reasonably or well satisfied at the workplace - quite the contrary the majority of the dimensions have scored close to insatisfactory. A General Satisfaction Indicator was also created, which allowed us a general diagnosis about the respondents fulfillment of these dimensions in the workplace. This indicator revealed that, in general, the military policemen surveyed present general satisfaction index leaning towards unsatisfied. Therefore, in general terms, this work tried to present the view of the military policemen about what dimensions best define their Quality of Working Life, as well as a satisfaction diagnosis, and hence contribute to their corporation with data that support the implementation of programs and policies whose objective is to better the quality of life at work of the Military Policemen of Pernambuco
