RESUMO

The spinal cord injury damages physically the persons body and brings with itself the disability issue. The consequences of this trauma interfere with these peoples quality of life and functional capacity becoming a dependence on other peoples care and limitations that go through their whole lives. The objective of this research was to verify the correlation between the quality of life and functional independence in men with traumatic spinal cord injury that practice or not physical activity in institutions in the Federal District. In order to achieve this, data from 30 men with traumatic etiology spinal cord injury were collected, being qualified as active (N=16) and sedentary (n=14) with an age of 20 to 60.To collect data the following instruments were used the SF-36 (medical Outcomes study 36-Item short-Form Health Survey), the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and the survey for diagnosing the level of physical activity of the study population (MATSUDO, 2000). In this study the age range was 41-50 (36,6%) and the average injury time was 20-30 years (36,6%);As the cause of the injuries the prevalence was guns (40%),in majority full(73,3%)and the predominance of the thoracic level injury(76,6%). The cord injured people that practice physical activity presented the Functional Independence values bigger than the sedentary ones. The domain functional capacity the SF-36 of the individuals that practice physical activity was bigger in relation to the sedentary ones. The results show that among the studied variables there was not a significant relation between the quality of life and the functional independence. The spinal cord injury brings itself lots of losses to the individuals, in relation to the motor aspects, functional independence, in the social relationships and, as a consequence, it affects their quality of life. The results of the study show that the quality of life is closely connected to the persons life style, and, as result, interventions as the physical activity can provide a better functional independence and quality of life.
