RESUMO

The image of God is a mainly unconscious construct in which feelings are predominant. It differs from the concept of God because this is a conscious set of ideas. A considerable volume of research dedicates itself in revealing how shapes this image in the infantile mind, and how it influences, by one side, the individuals religiosity, and by other, his psychological and spiritual well-being. These research, altogether with clinical experience and other factors, point to the fact that the way one interpret each element of religious life largely differs in accordance of being the individual a bearer of an image of a loving and compassionate God or an image of a wrathful and punitive God. The present paper intends to analyze, on the light of modern psychological science, especially in what touches the image of God, the Christian doctrine of penal satisfaction, that is to say, the explanation to Christs death that conservative theologians, overall the protestant ones, do considerate as being in the center of the Christian message. Such a doctrine, as well as the system in which it inserts, known as the plan of salvation, implies ascribing to God a cruel, wrathful and vengeful character, in such a way that one may suppose the presence of a negative image of God acting both in its origin and in its diffusion and maintenance. On other side, grounded in what we presently know about the effects of the beliefs of an individual over his affects, an attempt is made in establishing the relation between the doctrine of penal satisfaction, and the image of a punitive God it involves, with guilt feelings and shame, just as the impoverishment of personality
