RESUMO

AIMS: The aim of this study was to discuss the Group Analytic Psychotherapy (GAP) through the investigation of compliances and drop-outs, considering clinical, social and morivational variables in out patients of a public health service (PHS). METHOD: In a comparative study, 44 users of the Mental Health in the PHS were interviewed, of which 22 complied with the psychotherapy and 22 dropped it ou1. The instruments used in the data collection were: 1) a structured interview, 2) a research guide about Compliances and Drop-out, 3) the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, 4) the Beck Depression Inventory, and 5) a Documental Research (clinical promptuary). A structured interview guide was used with the Group Psychotherapists. RESULTS: Some multiple factors that contribute for the continuity/discontinuity of the group psychotherapy were identified from the patients report about their consciQus motivations for compliance or drop-ou1. Three important conditions that can interfere in the compliance/continuity ofthe process are: 1) the use of the communication in an affective and an effective way, 2) the relief of the symptoms, and 3) the pleasure on "being a group". On the other way, the conditions that can interfere in the drop out/discontinuity are: 1) the difficulties in the group communication, 2) a partial relief and/or the need ofthe symptoms preservation, and 3)a rejection for the group. Tnyre had also been detected important associations between the education leveI and the group psychotherapy compliance, and correlations between migrationlanxiety/drop-out and e most pronounced use of psychotropic drugs by the patients who dropped out. At last, the social-economical-demographical profile and the cIinical aspects of the uSér of the GAP in PHS showed that there is no differential factor for the ones who complied and the ones who dropped out, except the demographical and the clinical aspects. CONCLUSIONS: Compliances and drop-outs are constitutive factors in groups psychoanalytically oriented. It was found tlíat this treatment approach is workable, leading to curatives results and personal development. This study intends to contribute for the selection process, the organization and the management with groups in the P blic
