RESUMO

The aim of this work is to develop theoretical guidelines and propositions concerned with the teaching of English as a foreign language at primary level. The research was carried out in two public schools and in a private one, which were all located in a small city in the countryside of São Paulo State. In order to carry out our study, we firstly investigated into the official document entitled ?Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais ?Língua Estrangeira? (National Curricular Parameters for the Foreign Language Teaching), which presents officially established directions to guide such process. We were searching for some teaching orientation that could possibly be adapted to the teaching of English in the first grades. At the same time, we aimed at investigating the beliefs of the participants of the English teaching and learning process, such as the (English) teacher, the student, the coordinator, the director and the parents, as well. The theoretical framework was based upon studies on how children think and learn (Wood, 1998, Cameron, 2001), on the social interactionist (Vygotsky, 1998, 2001) and communicative (Almeida Filho, 1993, 2005) approaches to language and to language learning, on the view of language as discourse (Bakhtin, 2003, 2004) and, also, on the concept of beliefs related to the English teaching and learning (Barcelos, 2004) in a sociocultural and bakhtinian perspective (Alanen, 2003; Dufva, 2003). Our results show that some beliefs seem to be in conflict with others, as far as the belief that it is impossible to learn English effectively in public school is concerned. Some participants deny this conception, while others reinforce it, which can be related to social exclusion. Our data also point to the fact that some myths or strong beliefs must be deconstructed, so that we can have some positive transformations happen with regard to the foreign language teaching/learning process in Primary Education
