RESUMO

Samples of the surface and B horizons of a Plintosol as well as the B horizon of a Nitosol were treated with calcium carbonate, calcium and magnesium carbonate, and calcium sulfate. The objective was to study the effects of such amendments on chemical and physical properties of the soils. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with three replicates. The samples were packed into PVC columns sectioned in two 15 cm-cylinders. The amendments were applied on the upper cylinder. The lime requirement was calculated to reach 60% of base saturation while the gypsum dose was equivalent to 25% of lime requirement. Soil samples were kept incubated for 36 days. During this period, they were leached out through two pore-volumes using deionized water. The results showed that the treatments were not effective at ameliorating the soil acidic condition. There was not a significant influence of the amendments on the cation movement in the soil column as corroborated by low cation concentrations in the lower cylinder. On the other hand, calcium carbonate and its application with calcium sulphate provoked highest Ca contents in the lower cylinder. Calcium and magnesium carbonate treatments as well as their association with calcium sulphate provided the highest Mg concentrations in lower cylinders. This resultshows the role of such chemical amendments in supplying Ca and Mg to subsurfacee layers of soil. The treatments did not alter the physical soil properties. Water dispersed clay and floculation were little influenced by treatments, especially for the B horizons, which were statistically equal.
