RESUMO

The relationship between Knowledge Management (KM) practices and organizational performance is assessed in this work. A theoretical and systemic model named Quality Knowledge Management (QKM) is used. The themes research is related to the fields of study of Knowledge Management and Information Science (according with the broad view of Information Science proposed by Bertram C. Brookes). The QKM model is based on Total Quality Management TQMs elements, on the Criteria of Excellence of the Brazils National Quality Award, on the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Awards Management Excellence Model and on the KM cycles and models found in the KM literature. The QKM model is made of KM processes, practices and dimensions, as well as of the KDCA Cycle. In the first phase, the QKM model was built through bibliographic analysis and comparative studies, as well as bibliographic research. In the second phase, the QKM model was validated and hypotheses were tested through a quantitative and descriptive research (hypothesis verification study) in which the following tools were used: questionnaire with Likert scale and the following statistical techniques: Alpha of Cronbach, factorial analysis and Categorical Principal Components Analysis (CATPCA) with optimal scale (software SPSS 14.0). The survey was answered by RS (Rio Grande do Sul State) Quality Award winning organizations from 2000 to 2006. The main finding of the quantitative research was the confirmation that the Quality Knowledge Model is a valid and reliable model to assess the relationship between Knowledge Management practices and organizational performance. The correlations rates found confirmed the relationship shown by the QKM model among KM dimensions and among the KDCA Cycles phases. Points stressed by TQMs and KMs authors were sustained by the findings as well as the relationship among the criteria of the Management Excellences Model of the National Quality Award.
