RESUMO

There are several concepts of health promotion, as well as their various interpretations and applications. This is reflected in the way we perceive and deal with Promotion, used as a tool in Health Education. To discuss this subject properly, a historical retrospective is needed, so that we can better understand the present. This work discusses the concept of health promotion, in order to examine the practice of Community Health Workers (CHW), seeking to make these professionals more critical and active in their communities, so that they can become agents of change of a marginalized and excluded social context. The study was conducted in a Basic Health Unit in the town of Itajaí/SC, through four workshops with Community Health Agents. Using Paulo Freires Investigation Theory, the health workers were questioned about the nature of Health Promotion, its real dimension, how it is put into practice, and how it can be applied in the everyday practices of the Family Health Strategy (FHS). The results obtained in these workshops formed the basis of discussion and reflection on the concept, the beliefs and practices of health promotion developed by the CHWs, and its connection with Popular Education in Health. It was observed, in the conflicting speeches, that there are contradictions, a lack of training, and a lack of knowledge when it comes to Promotion and Popular Education in Health Promotion. Heath promotion is often confused with prevention. The banking model of education still persists, perpetuating a sense of alienation in relation to ways of understanding and doing health that is reflected in the educational proposals of the FHS. Prescriptive conduct is still common among professionals, many of whom are still trained according to a biomedical model. This suggests that we still have a long way to go in order to change the existing healthcare model
