RESUMO

A pulsed high voltage power supply, used for feeding a Klystron RF amplifier, in the Laboratorio Nacional de Luz Síncroton (LNLS) linear accelerator (LlNAC) is described. The design, development, assembling and constructive details are included. The system, named modulator, provides a 3 ?mu?s pulses of 250 kV and 250 A, with voltage stability better than 1%. The adopted topology is based on a pulse shaping system composed of a delay line using discrete LC elements. The charging of the delay line is achieved by a series resonance, consisting of its total capacitance and a charging inductor. This process permits to double de DC power supply voltage over the delay line. The stabilization of the output high voltage pulse is obtained when the charging is interrupted, according to a reference voltage, by abruptly. decreasing the quality factor (De Qing) of this resonant circuit. The maximum charging current is determined by the characteristic impedance of the resonant circuit, while the average current, drained from the line, is a function of the repetition rate of LlNAC, limited to 33 Hz. This power supply has been operating for more than 3 years producing 25 MW RF pulses
