RESUMO

The present research was done within the Education and Language field of the Post- Graduation Program of FAE/UFMG. The School Library National Program (PNBE) is a public program of reading incentive aimed at developing literary readers through the yearly distribution of literature books to public schools in Brazil. The 2006 edition of the PNBE Program was the object of this research, which was primarily guided by three main objectives: analisying if the collections selected by the program really reach the schools of the municipal system of Belo Horizonte; checking how well teachers knew about it and identifying its possible uses in the classroom. During the research, the possibility of interviewing young people in the final years of primary education (which is the focus of PNBE/2006) has permitted a first contact with information concerning the uses of the collections by these young people. Our research has been structured by means of two data collection tools: A form filled by professionals who worked at the school libraries, and an interview script used to guide our conversations with the students. These tools have allowed us to make a more accurate analysis about the concerned questions. It was possible to observe that the collections had properly reached the schools, what made possible the contact of the students with different texts that the PNBE Program aims at favoring. We have also noticed that the program advertisement is poor, because most of the professionals did not have any knowledge about its purposes and objectives. This was also common among teachers, who did not make any use of these collections in the classrooms. The most valuable conclusion of this research was to find out that, even if the students were not informed about the PNBE Program, they were reading the books and, according to our analysis and their testimonials, the works that make part of the collections are adapted to the likes and reading practices of young people.
