RESUMO

The main objective of this work was to evaluate the yield and profitability of no-till broccoli. During summer, an experiment was held at the experimental field in the National Vegetables Research Center- Embrapa Hortaliças/CNPH. The experimental design was of randomized blocks with a split-plot design and three replicates. Each cover crop pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum), corn (Zea mays), a mix between corn and black velvet-bean (Estilozobium aterrimum), sudex (Sorghum bicolor X S. sudanense) and conventional tillage (soil after fallow, prepared with plow and disk harrow) consisted in a plot, with the cultivars Avenger, Demoledor, Grandisimo, Green Storm Bonanza, Legacy and the experimental hybrid HECB01-06, representing the sub-plots. The experimental plot consisted of 14 plants in a single row, spaced 0.70 m x 0.5 m. The original data were obtained using 8 plants per plot. No differences were found among croping systems concerning broccoli yield. There were significant differences between cultivars for the evaluated variables. However, there was no significant interaction among cultivars and cover crops. The cultivar Avenger showed the highest yield (13.216 t.ha-1), average weight (457.5g), diameter (15.3cm) and visual aspect index of the curds. The medium cycle showed that the experimental hybrid HECB01-06 was the earliest harvested, initiating harvest 57 days after transplant. There were marked differences among cultivars for yield distribution, with the earliest cultivars being less productive. Also profitability of broccoli produced under no till and conventional system were compared. The data were collected on typical broccoli production unit and agriculture stores of the region. To calculate the economic feasibility, partial budget method of Agricultural Economic Institute and prices of broccoli sold at CEASA-DF from a five years period (2002 to 2006) were used. Results showed that the production costs of broccoli planted under no till system were compatible to conventional tillage (R$ 7.476,41 and R$ 7.279,88). The costs concerning soil prepare were reduced 21.46% with the adoption of no-tillage system. 99.2% of the broccoli sold, are produced by local farmers and the economic results are satisfactory with payback rate of 3.20%, considering the use of conventional tillage. In case of no-tillage system adoption, the payback rate can increase to 3.85%. The safety line registered a value of -0.68 and 0.74 for the conventional system and no tillage system, respectively. No till system appears as the better option when the project aims at future, because environmental, economic and soil characteristics are improved through the years. Those characteristics couldnt be perceptible only by the production costs presented at this study.
