RESUMO

The objective of the present work was to evaluate the quality of the briquettes produced using the charcoal residues, and, as agglutinant the anhydrous wood tar. The following parameters were used for the production of the briquettes: five granulometries (14; 20; 40; 60 mesh and one was a mixture of these in equal parts); four proportions of tar (0.3; 0.5; 0.7 and 0.9 parts of tar to each part of charcoal), and three compactation pressures (195; 260 and 325 kgf/cm2). The evaluation of the their quality was made by means of an immediate chemical analysis, the contents of volatile matters, ashes and fixed carbon were verified, and also the actual and apparent densities, porosity, compression resistance and heat capacity. The results showed that the briquettes produced with the charcoal residues of the 60 mesh granulometry with a proportion of 0.7 of tar and a compactation pressure of 325 kgf/cm2 were those that presented the best performances, or, a greater content of fixed carbon, smaller contents of volatile matters and ashes and a greater actual and apparent densities, a greater heat capacity, greater rupture tension and porosity.
