RESUMO

This work had the objective to evaluate the effect of grafting and Apoatã IAC 2258 cultivar as rootstock on ripening uniformity, yield and physical quality of beans of seven Coffea arabica cultivars. The experiment was conducted on an area free of nematodes located at the Agronomy Department of Lavras Federal University, Lavras, MG, Brazil, in January 2004. The experimental design was randomized blocks using a 7 x 3 factorial scheme with four repetitions. The treatments were Obatã IAC 1669-20, Acauã Oeiras MG 6851, Catucaí Amarelo 2SL, Topázio MG 1190, IBC Palma II and Paraíso MG H 419-1 coffee cultivars grafted on Apoatã IAC 2258, self grafted (meaning a cultivar was grafted on a rootstock of the same cultivar) and no grafting. The grafting was done when the seedlings were 5 cm high. The characteristic evaluated was the average yield of beans between the first and the fourth year (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009). Additionally, between the second and fourth year, were evaluated the characteristics the percentage of hollow beans, ripening uniformity of beans and the percentage of beans with sieves over 17. In the last two years were analyzed the disease incidence on leaf and beans caused by Cercospora coffeicola. It can be concluded that there is a direct relation between the rootstock and productive characteristics as ripening (maturation), bean size and disease incidence caused by Cercospora coffeicola in Coffea arabica cultivars. In areas with nematode infestation, where grafting necessary, with the exception of the Paraíso MG H 419-1 cultivar, all cultivars are good choices to be used as scions, especially cultivar IBC Palma II.
