RESUMO

The problem in to present research went know which quantification ideas children of 4 to 6 years of age possessed, identifying the procedures and classifying the types of graphic representation of the predominant amount in this age group. The research was placed among the studies based on the Piaget s theory, standing out the basic presuppositions related to the research and the paper of the social interaction that it is tied up to the process of communication of the amount, what generates a social need to represent the amount of elements of a group graphically. The communication need has the game as helper of the activity, being considered element unchaining of the operation of instruments that take to the child s cognitive structuring, favoring the construction of the graphic representation of the amount. 27 children were studied, divided in 2 groups with average of 4,6 and 5,6 years of age observed in 3 constituted stages of individual activities and games in group (Play of Data and Sjoelbak). The results indicated differences among the 2 age groups with relationship to the type of graphic representation ofthe amount. We found variability of procedures in the activities related to the number and the amount, even so with larger regularity among the oldest children. The children accomplished the sum of portions when in game situation, extrapolating the expectations of the present study. The results evidenced although it is possible to observe constructions previous to the opera tive notion of the number in sma11 children that wil1 serve them as base for the future arithmetic operations
