RESUMO

The geometric characteristics of highway devices can serve to either prevent or stimulate traffic accidents, which can result from a combination of human error, vehicle conditions, and road and weather conditions. Therefore, methods for measuring the impact of these characteristics on the effectiveness of highway safety are helpful in developing more appropriate projects and defining priorities for highway improvements or adaptations. This dissertation sought to develop a procedure for analyzing potential safety conditions of highway intersections, which disrupt the continuity of highway networks and directly affect safety, traffic flow, and vehicle speed. Specific geometric characteristics were prioritized and used as a basis for evaluating the safety potential of unsignalized at-grade intersections on single-lane highways in rural areas that are either still in project stages or already fully operational. Five highway intersections on two different federal highways in the state of Minas Gerais were studied. The results verified the applicability of the proposed procedure in preliminary analyses of intersection safety. This procedure is a helpful tool for prioritizing geometric improvements or adaptations, when used together with existing safety conditions analyses.
