RESUMO

Introduction: Chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) or terminal renal disease has variable prevalence and incidence and its occurrence depends on the socio-economic, race, sex, ethnics, and age conditions, among others. There are evidences in the developing countries that the pathologies that take to chronic renal insufficiency are not enough notified. Thus, they are not used for statistic purposes, new cases admission, dialysis programs, not even for death certificate. General objective: The accomplishment of this study intended to get to know the epidemiologic profile of chronic renal patients attended in two health units in the Federal District of Brazil. One unit was private and the other one state-owned. Methodology: The methodology used was a descriptive and quantitative approach. This is an analytic transversal study that has investigated the possible risk factors as a cause for CRI. Secondary data of 180 patients from medical reports were collected and analyzed, being 90 from a state-owned institution and 90 from a private institution. The following variables were analyzed: gender, age, ethnics, civil state, base disease, health complications, and the type of vascular access. The statistic software EPI 6.04 was used in the analysis. Results: Regarding the gender of the attended patients in the private clinic, 44.4% were male and 55.6% female; in the state-owned institution, 57.3% were male and 42.7% female. The average age in the private clinic was 46 years old (55.6%) and in the stateowned one, 44.6% of the patients had the age above 46 years old. 29.1% in the private clinic had declared themselves white and 70.1% not-white; in the state-owned institution, 45.2% had declared themselves white and 54.8% not-white. The degree of education was the following: 89% in the private clinic were literate; in the state-owned institution 95% were literate. Arterial hypertension has been confirmed as the main cause of CRI (p<0.001) and marginal in the case of diabetes mellitus (p<0.0057). When associated, they represent more than 37% of CRI base diseases. Conclusion: The pieces of information generated are in accordance with the specialized literature and demonstrate in the Federal District of Brazil the profile of the chronic renal patients and the more frequent complications by ethnics and base disease. Thus, health professionals can elaborate assistance plans to CRI patients, according to the specifications presented by the patients.
