RESUMO

This exploratory study assessed presumable prevalence and immunization coverage related to hepatitis B in graduates of Dentistry, Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), and their knowledge and attitudes front of the disease. A questionnaire was applied to 489 students from the first to the last period of the course. Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals. The presumable prevalence of hepatitis B was low (0.44%), and the immunization coverage, despite the students demonstrate knowledge about disease, the rate of vaccination has not been satisfactory - 48.25% of the graduates did not have 3 doses of vaccine. Furthermore, multivariate analysis showed that the variables: period (OR = 3.52), clinical stage (OR = 3.87), accidents by occupational exposure (OR = 2.26) and as the interval between doses vaccine (OR = 8.58) were considered protection factors for the sample evaluated. From this study, understand that the transitory explanations and campaigns to promote vaccination are not sufficient for an efficient modification of behavior. It is suggested here a more effective participation of teachers in the academic training of Dentistry, through theoretical / practical rules for the control and prevention of infection, and the requirement practice these attitudes.
