RESUMO

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is an important cause of pain in dentistry. Studies aiming at its etiology, treatment, and prevalence are needed for a more accurate diagnosis of this disease. The aim of this study was (a) to evaluate/analyze the prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD in volunteers treated at the Center of Studies and Treatment for Alterations in the Stomatognathic System (CETASE) at Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas ? UNICAMP, (b) to verify whether these signs and symptoms can serve as predictors of muscle and/or joint pains, and (c) to modify, or update, the clinical database form used at CETASE. This study evaluated 1.322 clinical forms of patients who looked for dental treatment at CETASE between 1995 and 2004. Among these forms, 400 were selected from volunteers aged 18?80 years. Data collection involved information on joint noises, limitation of mandibular movements, difficulty with mouth opening, deafness sensation, vertigo, and muscle and joint pains. Fisher?s Exact Test and Multiple Logistic Regression (p<0.05) were used for statistical analysis. Results showed that joint noises, muscle and joint pains, and deafness sensation were the most prevalent signs and symptoms. Joint noises, condylar displacement and absence of posterior occlusion can result in joint and/or muscle pains. The clinical database form used at CETASE was considered a reliable tool for data assessment; however, adaptations are needed to meet the requirements of the international model ? the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders
