RESUMO

The oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPVs) are important agents in the genesis of gynecological cancer and have been also related to mouth cancer. Aiming to assess the relation between HPV and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue, 50 white male smokers with a histological diagnosis of SCC and a control group composed of 10 subjects with no clinical evidence of lesions in the tongue were selected. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the presence of the HPV genome in fresh tissue samples from SCC in the edge of the mouth. Thirty-seven patients (74%) had a positive PCR for oncogenic papillomavirus, and in the control group only one sample (10%) was positive for non-oncogenic papillomavirus. Based on the statistical analysis, we concluded patients with oncogenic papillomavirus in the oral cavity are 25.6-fold more likely to develop SCC of the tongue and must be systematically followed-up by clinical and complementary tests.
