RESUMO

HCV infection is a major public health problem worldwide and is a major cause of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. It has been recently hypothesized that the hepatitis C virus (HCV) might be involved in the pathogenesis of malignant B-cell non-Hodgkinâs (B-NHL). On the basis of this observation we realize a prevalence hospitalbased study with a objective to determine the frequency of HCV infection in patients with BNHL. From January 2003 through December 2004, the 59 unselected consecutive patients with a B-NHL and 119 patients with non-hematology cancer, were submitted a blood analyses for HCV infection. The risk of being infected by HCV was compared with that of the patients with non-hematology cancer. HCV prevalence was 6,7% among B-NHL and 0,8% among the 119 patients with non-hematology cancer. The relative risk was 2,52 (CI95%= 1,54 â 4,11; p= 0,043). This study found a higher prevalence of HCV among patients with B-NHL than in a patients with non-hematology cancer
