RESUMO

The objectives of this study were to verify the association between presence of teeth and socio-demographic, economic, access to dental services and self-perception of oral health variables in adults (chap. 1) and in the elderly (chap. 2), as well as to verify the association between healthy teeth - FS-T index - with the variables mentioned above (chap. 3). The sample was composed of 1438 dentate adults (35 to 44 years of age) and 313 elderly individuals (65 to 74 years of age), representative of the State of Sao Paulo, being stratified into two groups: those with from 1 to 19 teeth and those with 20 or more teeth (chap. 1 and 2) and a group presenting the values above and another with values below the average FST index (chap. 3). For the bivariate analysis, the chi-square test was used and the logistic regression was performed (P <0.05). From the 1438 adults, 27.9% had from 1 to 19 teeth and 72.1% from 20 to 32 teeth, with an average of 11.9 and 26.4 present teeth, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, dissatisfaction with speech, lower educational level, being female, being older, living in the rural area, having 5 or more people living in the same house, low family income, long time without going to the dentist, being satisfied with the treatment and feeling that oral health does not affect the relationship with other people, were factors directly related with more missing teeth. In relation to the 313 elderly, 75.1% had from 1 to 19 teeth and 24.9% from 20 to 32 teeth, and the average of present teeth was of 9.5 and 25, respectively. In the bivariate analysis, the chance of having fewer teeth was among the elderly who did not visit the dentist for longer time, those who sought for public services and those who did not receive information on how to avoid dental problems, and even those who classified their speech as not good. Still in relation to adults, the average FS-T index was 20 healthy teeth, and 43.8% presented values below this average and 56.2% above it. It was found that living in the rural area presented strong association with fewer healthy teeth. In the multivariate analysis, the variables related to self-perception that showed differences between groups were dissatisfaction with speech and chewing. Most socio-demographic variables, besides low incomes, longer time without going to the dentist, going to the dentist only when feeling pain, were considered factors directly related with fewer healthy teeth. Individuals dissatisfied with the service presented more healthy teeth. Although the majority of adults present more than 20 present teeth and more healthy teeth, the perception was unsatisfactory with regard to speech and chewing. The fact of being younger and having better education and housing conditions may interfere in the teeth maintenance and promote a healthy and functional dentition. Unlike adults, most of the elderly presented from 1 to 19 teeth, and this fact was directly related, among other factors, with their report of unsatisfactory perception with regard to speech and to the long time without going to the dentist.
