RESUMO

The great amount of synthetic plastics that are discarded in the environment causes pollution because they are inert against the attack of microorganisms. This fact leads the researches to development biodegradable polymers. Polystyrene (PS) is among the most dominant packaging materials nowadays, however it does not decompose itself. Addition of cassava starch, a degradable polymer, to PS can achieve its degradability. The aim of this work was to develop, degradable blends of PS and thermoplastic starch (TPS) using two different plasticizers: glycerol or buriti oil, a novel and natural plasticizer for starch. PS/TPS blends were prepared in compositions of 9:1, 7:3, 5:5 and 3:7 by solvent casting technique. These were analyzed by water absorption, thermal analysis (TG/DTG, DSC, TMA), XRD and NMR in solid state. It was noticed that buriti oil is a plasticizer better than glycerol for starch, in these conditions. PS/TPS blends with buriti oil presented a continuous reduction in its T and T . For blends with glycerol these parameters have stayed practically g a constants. DRX and NMR analysis showed that it has not strong interactions among the blend components. PS/TPS blends were submitted to degradation by soil burial testing in perforated boxes for 6 months and later analyzed by TG, XRD and NMR. After degradation the blends with glycerol presented less stages of degradation and peaks of minor intensity, in relation to original blends. However, not even all starch was consumed for microorganisms. Analysis of PS/TPS blends with buriti oil showed that happened an increase of weight loss in TG curves and all peaks referent to starch disappeared in NMR after soil buried test, probably due to the consumption of starch by microorganisms. PS/TPS blends with buriti oil, in comparation to glycerol ones, presented less starch after degradation test. The obtained results showed that addition of TPS produced with buriti oil to PS can probably improve your degradability
