RESUMO

Aiming at subsidising a thrips sampling in Integrated Production of Mangoes and evaluating the damage caused by them on mango production, the thrips distribution in different parts and vertical strata of the plant and feeding damages were verify. The trial was carried out at Petrolina- PE, Brazil, from January 2006 to January 2007, in three mango growing areas, cv Tommy Atkins. In order to determine the density thrips in the parts of the plant, 9,242 mature leaves, 1,460 young leaves and 180 panicles of three types, differing in floral maturation stages, were sampled from 95 mango plants. Also, it was observed, the thrips and their damage in 1,794 fruits >15mm in 15 plants. In order to know the thrips vertical distribution, 276 panicles with young flowers in the superior, medium and inferior strata were sampled from 45 mango trees. 61,754 adult thrips of the species Frankliniella gardeniae and F. Brevicaulis were registered, with, respectively, 77% and 23% of occurrences in the areas. The thrips showed the highest densities in plants during flowering, into panicles with young flowers, locate in the superior and in the medium strata. 4% of the fruits were spotted due to thrips damage, which would cause a very big loss to mango growers. All these information contribute to the monitoring methodology and show thrips as an important mango pest in the studied region.
