RESUMO

The present funerary art in the Set of Cemeteries of Quinta dos Lázaros in Salvador -Bahia, conforms a Cemiterial Set sui generis, agglutinant of the most diverse socialpolitico categories, whose history this conjugated to the Art. This text has the objective to know through the reading of the artistic images, styles, influences, identification of artists - craftsmen, as well as the register of peculiar tombs, representative of its context or that they express clearly the values of this type of product, in relation to the artisan and artistic allegiance under the postulates of the History of the Art and the Mentalities.The secular age of the present study understands since 1850 up to 1920, period considered for the scholars of the Funerary Art as time of gold of the cemeteries. For the development of the research diverse methods of boarding had been used. It is distinguished of analyzes and synthesis, predominant in all the stages of the work, which add the description, iconographic and iconological. For its accomplishment vast documentation coming from archives and public and private libraries was worked, as well as references printed on the history of the cemeteries, funerary art, memory,representations of the death, religious production of artists and craftsmen, orders and third, amongst others. Through the study of Practical and the artistic Representations in the Cemeteries of the Convent of São Francisco and Venerável ordem Terceira do Carmo he was evidenced that the change of the burials of the churches for the cemeteries in century XIX, in Salvador, directly affected Religious Orders, Brotherhoods, Confrarias and Associations of Classroom, for believing that the creation of the new spaces represented a depreciation of Christianity movement, beyond intervening with the death rituals. After much resistance, but surprised for the Epidemic of the Cholera, the custom was substituted by the Law giving place the new attitudes.The studied cemeteries are certifications of this process, through practical and the kept artistic representations in the marble of its tombs and written by anonymous artists.
