RESUMO

The present study stands among studies which focus on reading as an individual practice that reflects the effects of actions and of the socio-cultural artifacts, which enable and make ground for continuous literacy experiences for the individual. An assumption is still taken that reading is an individual and situated process, and that under the multiple possible dialogs among author-text-reader, it generates distinct effects in each reader, as well as along the repeated encounters of the reader with that text. Therefore, that potentiates change in knowledge, attitude and values of readers, i.e., in their behaviors, including those related to other social practices. This work aimed to investigate functions attributed to reading, practices and attitudes concerning reading of young and adult students, and/or senior students of Basic Education ? workers. It specifically compared the information between those who work in companies in which reading projects are developed with those whose companies don?t provide differentiated spaces and support for reading access to their employees. The sample was constituted of 37 participants working in three transformation companies from a middle-sized county in Paraná State, which corresponded to the conditions defined for collection. Such companies provided distinct conditions to their cooperators: one offered schooling at work and developed a reading project, the second sought to encourage reading through its library collection, and the third didn?t offer schooling or any other reading incentive action to its employees. For data collection, it was used: a questionnaire, two scales, and a control form for book loans. Data survey occurred in the respective workplaces of participants. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were carried out, in light of the theoretical focus adopted. The set of results allowed differences and similarities concerning the functions participants attribute to reading, as well as their practices and attitudes concerning it to be found. Generally speaking, participants value reading as a learning and leisure source, thus important for their personal and professional life; however few are those who read or keep a narrow connection with reading. Literary works are the most searched in library collections. Work limitations are presented, as well as suggestions for the accomplishment of others.
