RESUMO

Bone Conduction Auditory Brainsterm Response is the most appropriate technique to access the cochlear reserve of newborns without the influence of any conductive component. It is a practical, accurate and noninvasive instrument for the differential diagnosis of conductive, mixed or sensorineural hearing loss. The purpose of this study was to investigate the Bone Conduction Auditory Brainstem Response in normal newborns up to 40 days old. The sample consisted of 10 newborns, 4 females and 6 males, with ages ranging from 3 to 40 days, without history of pre, peri- or post-natal complications, without risk factors for hearing impairment and with Otoacoustic Emissions present in the newborn screening. The electrophysiological threshold through Bone Conduction Auditory Brainsterm Response was measured at 50, 40 and 30 dBHL. Comparing ear and latency interpeak variables a significant difference can be seen, with best results on the right ear. The register of waves I and III occurred only at 50 dB, in all 20 ears. Wave V average latencies of V wave) by bone conduction found in this study were: 7.79 ms at 50 dBHL; 8.17 ms at 40 dBHL; 8.58 ms at 30 dBHL and 8.79 ms at 25 dBHL. However, the response at 25dBHL was found only in six newborns. It was possible to conclude that recordings of the Bone Conduction Auditory Brainsterm Response in newborns could be performed with satisfactory results, that is, the obtained parameters can be used in the pediatric clinical auditory evaluation, mainly in those at risk for auditory disability.
