RESUMO

The present work was developed with the purpose of assaying the potentiality of recycling the municioal solid wastes of Alfenas(MG). For so doing, it was necessary to characterize the collected solid wastes, to evaluate the total quantity of the collected garbage, and to survey the quantity which is currently recycled by the private garbage collectors. With the data obtained from the characterization, from the quantities collected, produced and unconventionally recycled, a balance of the was wade by calculating the total daily production both for the public collection and for the unconventional collection, as well as for the total daily production. The production "per capita" was also calculated for the public collection, for the unconventional collection and for the total daily production, with the result of 0,38 kgl capita.day. Then the current recycled production of the municipal solid waste collection was estimated in 2%. The percentage of the unconventional recycled production was equally estimated and reached 4,2%. The addition of these two values correspond to the total current recycling: 6,2%. Based on this percentage, on the total daily production, and on the characterization of the wastes, the potential of recyclin in Alfenas (MG) was estimated in 33 % of the daily production, or 7,0 metric. ton/day. A suggestion is finally proposed for the management of residues produced in Alfenas (MG)
