RESUMO

The rust and brown spot eye are considered the main diseases of coffee plant, it reduces the production and undermine the drink quality. The management of the disease is conventionally done by application of copper and systemic fungicides, however, they may promote the contamination of man, environment and select resistant pathogens races. Thus, the essential oils could be an alternative to control of rust and brown spot eye coffee plant. Considering the exposed, the objectives of this work were: (i) to assess the effect in vitro of essential oils of cinnamon (CA), citronella (CI), lemon grass (CL), clove (CR), tea-tree (ME), thyme (TO), neem (NI) and eucalyptus (EU) on the germination of both urediniospores of Hemileia vastatrix and conidia of Cercospora coffeicola; (ii) to assess the effect of these on mycelial growth of C. coffeicola; (iii) to assess the effect of essential oils to control of rust and brown spot eye in different coffee cultivars in greenhouse; (iv) to assess the systemic protection of essential oils most promising in the different cultivars and their effects on control of rust and brown spot eye and; (v) to assess in vivo effects of these on the conidia germination and fungal development of C. coffeicola through scanning electron microscopy. All essential oils promoted the germination inhibition of both urediniospores of H. vastatrix and the conidia of C. coffeicola with increasing concentrations. The essential oils of CR, CA, NI, TO and CL inhibited the mycelial growth of C. coffeicola concentration in 1000 μL L-1. The essential oils promote partial diseases control in the greenhouse, and the oil TO, CR and CI were the most promising to rust control in Catucaà 2SL, Catuaà IAC 62 and Mundo Novo 379/19 cultivars, and the oil CA and CI to brown spot eye control in all cultivars. The essential oil of CR presented local effect, while the oil of the CI presented systemic effect against coffee leaf rust. The essential oils of CA and CI promoted systemic protection in cultivars Catucaà 2SL and Catuaà IAC 62 against spot eye control. The essential oils of CA and CI reduced germination and mycelial development of C. coffeicola in vivo, promoting the leakage of the cell cytoplasm.
