RESUMO

This dissertation hereby aims at discussing about pop music functions in the filmic narrative. After all, pop music operates a variety of roles in the cinema universe both as building a film meaning and addressing it to a specific audience which uses music as a cultural device, and as a fundamental element to the own filmic narrative, performing some action, characterizing some characters, or establishing some moods. The research aims at pointing some different perspectives about pop music and more conventional original score, emphasizing some peculiar pop matters (cultural uses, lyrics disruption to the filmic narrative, musical genres etc). With that set, this work presents a discussion about the media surrounds and plastic aspects which involves pop music use in the cinema, as well about its functions in the filmic narrative, considering the aesthetic proposals and economic and technical matters of the specific kind of film which is studied here, the so-called "pop movies". This kind of movie sets contemporary and urban scenery, with youth themes and fragmentary narratives that bring an excess of elements and also articulate pop music and pop culture devices. Considering the nowadays common practice of releasing a soundtrack album related to the movies and the way pop music has been utilized as a narrative element and a cultural device, this research proposes a media analysis of Pulp fiction, Trainspotting, Donnie Darko and 9 songs soundtracks, regarding the fulfilled functions, the musical genres and the scenarios they add to the films.
