RESUMO

The main objective of this dissertation is to evaluate the perspectives of Brazil in the emerging bio-ethanol international market. Many countries have initiatives for blending ethanol with gasoline in order to displace MTBE as octane enhancer, to reduce GHG emissions, to reduce oil dependence, and to foster local agricultural activities. Brazil has tradition and even an enormous potential on biomass production, being remarkable its experience on bio-ethanol production. The perspectives for the rising of ethanol production are very favorable, both considering the domestic and the international market. The growth of the domestic market is due to the success of the flex-fuel vehic1es, while the development of the international market is due to the reasons previously presented, but mainly to the concerns about c1imate change. To enlarge the current capacity, both to supply the domestic demand and to occupy an important share of the international market, it would be necessary to build new industrial units (about 150 new plants), to enlarge the harvested area (4 Mha) and to improve the logistics. However, despite the high competitiveness of Brazilian industry, its share in the international trade will depend on overcome trade barriers in a negotiation process that is complex and gradual. The sustainability of ethanol production, considering environmental, social and economic aspects, is a very important issue, as the buyers should demand certifies to assure that certain production standards have been accomplished. Also regarding sustainability the Brazilian ethanol industry has reached remarkable results during the last 30 years, but it is still necessary to enhance its performance to assure an important role in the bio-ethanol trade
